Keep Tahoe Safe with Defensible Space is a charity fund established to exclusively benefit the education of residents in the South Lake Tahoe basin about defensible space. This fund was brought about by the events of the Angora Wildfire of June 2007, which affected the South Lake Tahoe community. Specifically, residents of the Meyers area located within the Lake Valley Fire Protection District were forced to evacuate as many of their homes burned in the fire. The reality of fire danger to the ecology, environment and the lives of residents, is and has been a paramount concern for rural communities. Woodland communities such as South Lake Tahoe and Meyers are high fire hazard environments, containing all the elements that lead to intense and uncontrollable wildfires.
In the wake of this tragic event, local residents and
government officials focused on the topic of defensible space.
Defensible space in outlying urban areas is an ecological long term
sustainable strategy that everyday individuals can enact in their
communities, apart from fire departments and government agencies. This
site is dedicated to raising awareness and providing assistance for
current and future Tahoe residents in order to create defensible space
needed to protect the community as a whole. Additionally, this site is
a source for providing guidelines to homeowners in understanding their
rights as property owners in relation to the laws and regulations
enforced by various agencies in the Lake Tahoe basin.
Keep Tahoe Safe is the creation of a group of individuals
whose roots in Tahoe go back generations and who grew up in the South
Lake Tahoe and Meyers areas. In order to continually support these
efforts for the future of the community, we as locals and current
residents need your assistance to increase our funding and promoting
our message through donations and the endorsement of our slogan.
